We went to the Trona Pinnacles on Saturday. The Pinnacles are 500 tufa spirals found at the bottom of Searles (dry) Lake Basin. Many movies and TV series have filmed here including Planet of the Apes, Lost in Space and Star Trek.
On our way there, Steve's SUV got a flat tire on one of the dirt roads. After hiking a while he, Jaime and two of their kids decided to leave early so they could fix the tire before their trip home the next day. The rest of us decided we'd take a driving tour of the pinnacles and then head home. As we started on the tour, we discovered that the road was meant for more offroading vechiles than a Buick and Camry. We high-centered a few times and almost got stuck in dry riverbeds a few more times but both cars made it out unharmed. It was fun hiking around and exploring the area even if a little offroading was required.
